When Brenda McElmore showed up to get her hair dyed at a local JCPenney salon in Downey, Calif., she probably didn't expect to hear "no." Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. According to McElmore, the receptionist at the front desk told her, "We don't do African American hair." McElmore says she was "astonished" to be denied service strictly because of her race.

Waikiki Spa Owner Lillian Mori

Lillian Mori did no market research before she decided to start her business. “My husband would ask me, ‘How is that business plan coming?’ and I would just say, ‘Oh, yeah,’ ” said Mori. “But my business is based on my heart. I just found the space and built it.”

After moving to Honolulu in 1992, Mori worked at Outrigger Reef on the Beach, the Mandara Spa at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa, and Spa Olakino Salon at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

Beware of Fake Spa Gift Certificate Programs

One man learned the hard way that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.  L'Avantage is a salon and day spa in The Woodlands, Texas. It has hairstylists and offers waxing and massages. One man thought he was buying a gift certificate for their services, but ended up falling victim to a scam (perpetrated by an advertising agency).
