Steiner Leisure Limited (NASDAQ:STNR) has committed to supporting international Earth Day on 22nd April, through its promotion SEED (Steiner Evergreen Earth Drive) by planting a tree (donation of $1) for every client who experiences a treatment at one of its spas or who makes a purchase through its websites.
In an industry predicated on pampering guests, a satisfying guest experience can require anything from putting expensive high thread count sheets on beds to stocking the lobby with “your wish is my command” concierges. So it’s no surprise that some lodgings have built super-sized spas where guests can relax, rejuvenate and generally retreat from the outside world.
The only problem: Many of these spas -- by the industry’s own estimates -- are fabulously oversized at the same time that they are famously underutilized.
A questionnaire for new clients at the Murad Health Center, a spa in in El Segundo, California, wants to know everything about you. Ever had heart problems? How about back pain? And what if you had no obligations tomorrow? Do you have any meaningful plans for the rest of your life?
The 34-page lifestyle Q&A doesn't hold back. It wants to know "the last time you felt really well" and whether you "begin the day with activities that nurture your body and spirit." If the answers are hard to find, then you'd better start thinking about them. Today's spas are out to do more than merely erase age spots or ease a few kinks in your neck.
"We're always getting massages," Troy Coughlin said, "or my wife is getting her nails done. We're totally pampered by the people at the spa." Coughlin, a professional drag racer from Delaware, Ohio, and his wife, Julie, are among the many who in recent years have bought vacation homes at spa resorts.
The Canadian Tourism Commission reports that 2,300 destination and day spas across the country welcomed more than 14 million visitors and generated $1 billion in business in 2005. The brisk competition means that wellness centres -- no matter what the size, budget, style or location -- are looking for creative approaches.
The Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort announced the completion of a dramatic renovation of the existing two-story 6,000 square-foot spa. Now under the direction of Alan Navarette, Spa Oasis opened its doors unveiling a 7,000 square-foot sanctuary of tranquility with traditional elements of Mexican flair.

Massage therapists (in the Northern California city of Benecia) have forced the city to delay imposing regulations they said did not treat them as health care professionals. . . . One therapist said parts of the ordinance were "insulting" -- such as requiring medical exams to ensure the therapists are free of communicable diseases.
